A new power unit for mobile traffic lights designed by Leeds-based power solutions provider, William G Search, has been given the green light from the industry¡¦s market leaders.
The engine, launched earlier this year, is the first-ever standard power unit designed to suit the needs of every different manufacturer and is expected to save the industry several thousands pounds a year.
The UK¡¦s two major manufacturers of mobile traffic light sets, Pike Signals and SPW, have both placed significant orders for the Search-modified Lister Petter AC1 engine.
Pike Signals of Birmingham has already purchased 100 engines to power its ¡¥QS Super Silenced¡¦ portable traffic light sets, and has begun taking delivery of a further 100 units due to additional demand.
Managing Director Chris Pearson said: ¡§We¡¦ve been impressed by the performance and reliability of Search¡¦s engine since it came onto the market. Having one standard engine for the industry removes some of the risk from product development and helps us keep costs down.¡¨
Key benefits of Search¡¦s design include its robust build, low speed running, low maintenance requirements, flexibility and low fuel consumption.
Eddie Whitham, Divisional Manager for Power Products at Search, said: ¡§The fact that the two market leaders have shown such a high level of interest is extremely encouraging. It made good business sense to design one unit which would satisfy all different needs and this view is being endorsed in the market.¡¨
