William G Search, the power solutions provider and engine distributor, has designed a new engine to power the thousands of mobile traffic lights seen at roadworks throughout the UK. This is the first time that there has been a standard engine designed to suit the needs of all the different manufacturers of mobile traffic lights sets.
The resulting economies of scale are expected to save the industry several thousand pounds a year.
Search identified the problem after it became an OEM Powercentre some three years ago and decided to find a solution. The company was supplying Lister Petter engines to several manufacturers of small mobile traffic lights sets. As all the manufacturers used slightly different versions of the same engine, it meant there was little standardisation and a potential supply problem for some parts.
After several months ¡V and two prototypes ¡V Search has designed a new version of the Lister Petter engine that successfully meets all the requirements of each individual manufacturer.
Eddie Whitham, Divisional Manager for Power Product Sales & Parts at William G Search, explained: ¡§It has been a more complicated exercise than we originally expected but we now have an engine that can be used as the industry standard. This will make it easier to deal with the peaks and troughs in the market and save our customers money at the same time.¡¨
Mr Whitham said the project involved analysing the specifications and preferences of each manufacturer in order to produce a final prototype that all manufacturers could use. The various subsequent adaptations now simply involve changes to external components only.
